A coalition of 118 groups from a variety of disciplines mailed Gov. Andrew Cuomo today on his call for campaign finance reform, urging the governor to push for lower contribution limits and better enforcement of campaign laws.
Among the groups signing on to the letter are a variety of groups well known in Albany circles?such as the Alliance for Quality Education and various statewide labor organizations and good-government groups?as well as local chapters such as Iona College Democracy Matters.
The letter, sent to Cuomo?s office today, praises the governor for his support during his State of the State address in calling for a public-funding option in state campaigns, but urged him to be a driving force behind pushing campaign finance change through the Legislature.
?Integral to reforming the state?s campaign finance laws are other essential elements set forth in your State of the State address,? the letter reads. ?Reasonable contribution limits without loopholes; ?pay to play? rules for companies and individuals doing business with the State; and, in particular, strong but fair and independent enforcement of our campaign finance laws?all of these are needed to restore public trust in our government.?
