Dutch populist leader takes aim at EU _ and flops

AMSTERDAM (AP) ? With his mane of platinum-blond hair, Geert Wilders rose to prominence by hammering away at a hardcore anti-Islam message. Now, as the Netherlands heads into elections with economic crisis raging across the continent, Wilders has taken aim at a different target: the European Union.

But this time, the populist firebrand's attempt to ride a wave of voter anger appears to be foundering.

Wilders has tried to revive his Freedom Party's fortunes on promises to ditch the euro and ignore European budgetary rules ahead of the Sept. 12 election.

"Do we want to be the boss over our own money or do we want to be slaves to Brussels?" he told voters in the campaign's first major televised debate. Wilders said his Freedom Party wants "us to be in charge of our own country again."

His vision seems unlikely to become reality anytime soon. Freedom is lagging in the polls and centrist Dutch parties flatly reject his financial plans as too radical.

Not long ago, Wilders' tirades against the "dictators in Brussels" might have had the Dutch and European establishment running scared. Wilders became one of the Netherlands' most powerful politicians by tapping into anti-immigrant sentiment that engulfed the country after the 2004 murder of filmmaker Theo van Gogh by a Muslim extremist.

Wilders called for banning the Quran and introducing a tax on Islamic headscarves. He made international headlines with his 2008 short film "Fitna," which portrays Islam as an ideology based on violence and hate. His rhetoric offends many Muslims, but it electrified a large bloc of Dutch voters who felt Wilders was the only politician voicing their concerns about problems caused by immigrants.

The Freedom Party emerged as the country's third-largest after June 2010 elections. When Wilders was hauled into court on hate speech charges ? which he triumphantly beat ? Freedom briefly topped national polls.

But then, as Europe's debt crisis forced immigration issues into the background, Wilders' popularity began a steady slide.

In an attempt to broaden his appeal, he began ramping up his anti-Europe rhetoric. Wilders has always been a skeptic of the European Union, but he hadn't concentrated on Brussels much since 2005, when he was in the vanguard as the Dutch overwhelmingly voted to reject a European constitution in a national referendum.

The new euro bashing is "a very opportunistic move," says Chris Aalberts, author of a book examining the motivations of Wilders and his supporters. With the anti-immigration vote locked up, "they're taking the gamble that there are enough people mad about the euro that they'll vote for Freedom."

Wilders loudly opposed bailouts for southern European countries, at one point printing up an oversize replica of an old drachma note and trying to deliver it to the Greek Embassy as a stunt.

Yet the Dutch economy has only slowly been dragged down by Europe's debt crisis. And Wilders' anti-European credentials never looked genuine as long as he continued to support the government. Under Prime Minister Mark Rutte's all-conservative coalition, the Netherlands has been a reliable supporter of the German approach to the crisis: austerity for all and support for weaker economies only when things seemed about to spin out of control.

In April Wilders finally withdrew his support from Rutte's Cabinet, bringing down the government and precipitating the current elections. Wilders' reason: He didn't want to adhere to Europe's 3 percent budget deficit limit.

But in an unexpected turn, euro-skeptic votes kept flowing away from Wilders in a different direction: to the far-left Socialist Party.

The Socialists, long a fringe party with no experience in national government, have grown fast under affable leader Emile Roemer, dubbed "Fozzie Bear" by a popular Dutch news blog.

Roemer, like Wilders, has said he opposes Europe's 3 percent deficit limit, but does not advocate going as far as Wilders and quitting the EU altogether.

Polls show Roemer's Socialists and Rutte's libertarian VVD Party in a neck-and-neck race to take the most votes, with each forecast to win around 32 seats in the 150-member Dutch parliament. Wilders, meanwhile is a distant third with around 18 seats ? six fewer than he took in 2010.

"I wouldn't rule out that (Wilders) could still benefit from euro-skeptic vote," Aalberts said. "If you're conservative and you're against Europe, then you wind up voting for Freedom."

But he said the difference wouldn't be more than several seats, not enough to make Wilders a contender for prime minister.

With the far-left and far-right splitting the anti-euro vote, there is no credible coalition with centrist parties that would be willing to adopt a radically anti-Brussels line.

If Rutte's party is the largest, as seems likely, he has no intention of ditching the very European rules he helped draft. In Sunday's debate Rutte flatly dismissed any chance of pulling out of the eurozone.

"That would be deadly for employment in the Netherlands," he said.

Wilders voters say there are other factors working against him.

On Amsterdam's largest open air market, store owner Bob Uitermarkt said Wilders is paying the price for torpedoing the previous Cabinet, making him seem unreliable. He also doesn't take Wilders' euro plans seriously.

"It was a mistake getting into it, but there's no way back now," he said.

But he will still vote for Freedom, because he trusts Wilders will continue to do all he can to limit immigration.

"Yesterday we had a woman wearing a burqa in the store. I'm all for freedom of religion, but this is just out of place," he said. "It's like trying to talk to someone through a mailbox slot."

At a neighboring booth, Max Kloots said the point wasn't so much that Wilders is sidelined from government, but that he continues voicing his opinions forcefully. Kloots doesn't want the Netherlands to pull out of Europe, but Wilders' rhetoric is "a signal."

"He's keeping (mainstream parties) listening to the people."

The Dutch oppose any further surrender of sovereignty to Brussels by a wide margin.

Author Aalberts says Wilders may have a long career ahead of him ? as an opposition gadfly.

"I'm not an economist and making predictions is dangerous, but just watch," he said. "If the VVD leads a new coalition, they will always have one eye on the polls, and Wilders will force them to take as hard a line against Brussels as they can."

Danish scientists solve old blood mystery: New intriguing knowledge on blood hemoglobin

ScienceDaily (Aug. 31, 2012) ? Scientists at the research centre MEMBRANES at Aarhus University, Denmark, have completed an old puzzle, which since the 1960s from many sides has been regarded as impossible to complete. The challenge was to solve the structure of the protecting protein complex that forms when hemoglobin is released from red cells and becomes toxic. This toxic release of hemoglobin occurs in many diseases affecting red cell stability, e.g. malaria.

Technically, the most important finding in this report in Nature is a high-resolution three-dimensional mapping of the so-called 'haptoglobin-hemoglobin complex'.

"After many failing experiments, our breakthrough came when we gave up using human material and went to the local slaughterhouse to purchase pig blood. Not a particular high-technological approach, but this transition from studying human blood to blood from a species with close homology had magic effects. After running into dead ends for two years and trying out the most complex gene-technological ways to produce the right material, it suddenly worked," says S?ren Kragh Moestrup, the head of the research group at Department of Biomedicine.

The discovery provides new essential information on hemoglobin that makes up most of the red cell interior. hemoglobin is an essential blood component for transport of oxygen, but it becomes toxic with potential damaging effects on tissues, in particular the kidneys, when it is released from the red cells. An excessive release can occur in many diseases, such as malaria and other infections.

However, the body has a sophisticated defence system. The first line defence is carried out by the blood protein haptoglobin, which captures hemoglobin and gates it to a receptor that engulfs the hemoglobin-haptoglobin complex. This function of the receptor named CD163 was originally discovered by the same group.

"We have now shown how this unique protein complex forms by generation of a detailed 3-dimensional map of each atom. This shows for the first time how the complex is formed and explains the tight protein association," says PhD Christian Brix Folsted Andersen. He has together with Master's student Morten Torvund-Jensen been an essential driving force in the project.

The results have also led to an unexpected discovery of a novel type of protein structure and a new patent submission on exploitation of the discovery for use in generation of a new type of synthetic proteins to be used in therapy and diagnostics.

The Picky Eating Phase? How to deal! | drmomnd

The last few weeks have been particularly challenging for us here in our household. ?My lover of all foods has been a bit picky, eek! The son of a naturopath, picky? How dare he! I have been lucky thus far since I could pretty much make any food combination and he would eat it up as if I just made him the greatest meal ever. ?So I guess it?s about time I learned to get creative with my son?s cuisine.

It first started with breakfast, he wasn?t loving his oatmeal the way he once was. ?I understood this, who doesn?t like to shake it up a little bit? He deserves variety and options so I started mixing it up. ?If your child is anything like mine, they love whatever you love, they want to be just like you, so perhaps your meals are looking a little more enticing then theirs. ?This is true for my son, he LOVES whatever we love, if he can eat it off my plate then it is the coolest and most delicious thing he has ever tasted. ?He always comes back for more, with mouth wide open, so I knew this what I needed to cater to. ?I didn?t want to get distressed and start pressuring him to eat as this would eventually result in negative associations with meal time. ?I want to continue to nurture my son?s love for food so I have to help him along the way by making his food fun and interesting.

We love smoothies for breakfast and so does my son, so this is what he shall get! Since he is a smoothie loving man, I can add in my favourite healthy foods for him and not force him to eat? Perfection! ?Other options he loves to mix it up with are:

  • Gluten free Pumpkin seed & blueberry muffins (I will post recipe soon)
  • Scrambled or poached eggs
  • Blender pancakes with apple butter
  • Organic puffed corn or puffed brown rice (not cereal, just puffed grains) with goat or almond milk

More recently my son has decided that he does not want to eat the veggie and protein meals that I prepared for lunch and dinner and no convincing or tricking him with spoonfuls of apple sauce would satisfy him. ?He shakes his head wildly ?No, no, no, no, NO!?. ?I had to think of something else. ?This past week I decided to make pureed soups for our lunches and I had a thought, if my son loves to drink smoothies then perhaps he would equally enjoy drinking his vegetable soups. ?Guess what? I was right, he loves drinking out of mason jars as much as I do. ?So not only should we try mixing up the types of food offered, but also mix it up by allowing your child to experience food in different ways. ?I put his lunch and dinner soups in mason jars and away we went, zero resistance at meal times!

Here are a few things to remember during these challenging times:

  • Children go through different growth phases and they are not always going to have a huge appetite, try and allow them to eat when they are hungry and eat until satisfied. ?Do not force them to eat the same amount daily, their hunger will fluctuate and you need to allow them to learn to listen to their body?s signals.
  • Try not to get discouraged by these phases because that is all they are, a phase. ?If they are having a picky week try and find ways to make food and meal time fun. ?Stay positive and focus on how you can foster healthy attitudes towards food and meal times.
  • Get creative! Look at the things they do like, do they want to eat off your plate, are your foods more enticing? If so, give them the same sized plate or feed them what you are eating, try and find ways that excite them about food. ?Cut fruit into shapes, let them drink their soup, add fruit into their veggie purees.
  • Dr. Sears stresses that parents should view a balanced diet by assessing their children?s weekly diet as opposed to daily, I think this makes a lot of sense and is more realistic.

Remember that this does not mean you now have a picky eater, try not to label them that way and try harder not to get distressed. ?Healthy living is about the journey not the destination and you will impress yourself with how inventive you can get when given the challenge. ?I know because I impresesd myself with my ability to think outside the box when given the opportunity. ?To be honest, I felt those feeling of panic and thought ?oh great now I have a picky eater?, but I caught myself and I changed my reaction. ?I knew I could do better and be a good example for my child on how to cope with change. ?I know you are capable of doing the same.

I would love to hear what you have done to help your child love food and eating. ?Please share your ideas we can all learn from each other and feel less stressed as a result.

Happy eating!

Nutrition tied to improved sperm DNA quality in older men

Monday, August 27, 2012

A new study led by scientists from the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) found that a healthy intake of micronutrients is strongly associated with improved sperm DNA quality in older men. In younger men, however, a higher intake of micronutrients didn't improve their sperm DNA.

In an analysis of 80 healthy male volunteers between 22 and 80 years of age, the scientists found that men older than 44 who consumed the most vitamin C had 20 percent less sperm DNA damage compared to men older than 44 who consumed the least vitamin C. The same was true for vitamin E, zinc, and folate.

"It appears that consuming more micronutrients such as vitamin C, E, folate and zinc helps turn back the clock for older men. We found that men 44 and older who consumed at least the recommended dietary allowance of certain micronutrients had sperm with a similar amount of DNA damage as the sperm of younger men," says Andy Wyrobek of Berkeley Lab's Life Sciences Division.

"This means that men who are at increased risk of sperm DNA damage because of advancing age can do something about it. They can make sure they get enough vitamins and micronutrients in their diets or through supplements," adds Wyrobek.

Wyrobek conducted the research with a team of researchers that includes Brenda Eskenazi of the University of California at Berkeley's School of Public Health and scientists from the University of Bradford in the United Kingdom. They report their findings in the August 27 online issue of the journal Fertility and Sterility.

Their research comes as more men over 35 have children, which raises public health concerns. Previous research conducted in Wyrobek's lab found that the older a man is, the more he's likely to have increased sperm DNA fragmentation, chromosomal rearrangements, and DNA strand damage. Older men are also more likely to have increased frequencies of sperm carrying certain gene mutations, such as those leading to dwarfism. These findings help explain why aging men are less fertile and are predicted to have more chromosomally defective pregnancies and a higher proportion of offspring with genetic defects.

But until now, researchers haven't understood whether diet can protect against the detrimental effects of aging on the sperm genome.

The scientists studied a group of about 80 men between 20 and 80 years old with an average age of 44. They were recruited several years ago as part of the California Age and Genetic Effects on Sperm Study when Wyrobek was at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Each man who participated in the study filled out a 100-item questionnaire that estimated their average daily vitamin intake, both from food and supplements.

In addition, their sperm DNA quality was assessed via a lab analysis in which a voltage gradient pulls broken DNA strands from intact strands within the sperm nucleus.

Each volunteer's intake of a micronutrient was classified as low, moderate, or high based on how they compared to other participants. The median daily intake, both from diet and supplements, was 162 milligrams for vitamin C, 23.7 milligrams for vitamin E, 2,586 micrograms for ?-carotene, 475 grams for folate, and 12.3 milligrams for zinc. Many participants, even those who reported to be healthy, consumed much less than the recommended dietary allowance for many of the micronutrients.

The scientists analyzed the data several ways and came up with the same result each time: A diet high in antioxidants and micronutrients may decrease the risk of producing sperm with DNA damage, especially in older men.

Why this is so isn't a mystery. Antioxidants scavenge reactive molecules that cause oxidative damage to cells. Studies have shown that dietary supplementation with antioxidants and increased consumption of antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables can decrease the amount of oxidative DNA damage.

Based on their results, the scientists believe this same protective mechanism may also be at work in the reproductive tract of older men.

"The different response of the old and young men presents new opportunities for health care, especially for older men planning families," says Wyrobek.

More research is needed, however. Although the scientists found a clear link between higher vitamin intake and improved sperm DNA quality in older men, they don't know whether this link extends to male fertility and the health of offspring.

"Our research points to a need for future studies to determine whether increased antioxidant intake in older fathers will improve fertility, reduce risks of genetically defective pregnancies, and result in healthier children," says Wyrobek. "The research also raises a broader question beyond sperm DNA: How might lifestyle factors, including higher intakes of antioxidants and micronutrients, protect somatic as well as germ cells against age-related genomic damage?"

NASA satellites are providing imagery and data on Typhoon Tembin southwest of Taiwan, and Typhoon Bolaven is it barrels northwest through the Yellow Sea. In a stunning image from NASA's Aqua satellite, Bolaven appears twice as large as Tembin.

NASA's Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument that flies onboard the Terra satellite captured a remarkable image of Typhoon Tembin being dwarfed by giant Typhoon Bolaven at 0240 UTC on Aug. 27, 2012. The visible image shows that the island of Taiwan appears to be squeezed between the two typhoons, while the northeastern arm of Typhoon Tembin's clouds extend over the southern half of Taiwan and sweep over Luzon, the Philippines, where it is better known as Typhoon Igme. Bolaven appears to be twice as large as Typhoon Tembin and has a visible eye. Tembin's eye appears obscured by high clouds in satellite imagery.

Typhoon Bolaven recently passed over Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan as it moves northwestward into the Yellow Sea for a final landfall later this week in North Korea. Clouds from Bolaven's northeastern quadrant were blanketing Japan's island of Kyushu, which is the southwestern most island of the four main islands of Japan. The Yellow Sea is an arm of the North Pacific of the East China Sea, and it is situated between China and Korea.

On Aug. 26, NASA's Aqua satellite captured both storms in one infrared image. The Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) instrument captured an infrared image of Typhoon Tembin southwest of Taiwan and Typhoon Bolaven entering the Yellow Sea. AIRS has been providing infrared data about cloud temperatures, and sea surface temperatures around the storm. Both storms had large areas of very cold clout top temperatures that exceeded -63F/-52C) indicating strong uplift in each storm. At the time of the image, Bolaven was moving over the Ryukyu Islands. They are a chain of islands owned by Japan that stretch southwest from Kyushu, Japan to Taiwan.

On Aug. 27, infrared imagery from NASA's Aqua satellite showed that Bolaven maintained tightly-curved banding of thunderstorms that were wrapping into a well-defined and large low-level circulation center. The center of circulation is as large as 550 nautical miles in diameter!

Typhoon Bolaven in the Yellow Sea

On Aug. 27, 2012, Typhoon Bolaven was moving through the Yellow Sea. Its maximum sustained winds were down to 70 knots (80.5 mph/129.6 kmh). Bolaven was located approximately 380 nautical miles (437.3 miles/703.8 km) south-southwest of Seoul, South Korea, near 32.2 North and 125.0 East. The typhoon is moving to the north-northwestward at 16 knots (18.4 mph/29.6 kmh) and creating high seas of 43 feet (13.1 meters).

Bolaven is expected to weaken as it moves into cooler waters in the Yellow Sea. It is also expected to run into stronger wind shear. Bolaven is expected to make landfall in southwestern North Korea on Aug. 28.

Typhoon Tembin Ready to Move North

Typhoon Tembin completed its cyclonic loop south of Taiwan, and is now poised to move northeast and pass Taiwan on its journey behind Bolaven, into the Yellow Sea. On Aug. 27 at 1500 UTC (11 a.m. EDT), Tembin had maximum sustained winds near 65 knots (75 mph/120.4 kmh) making it a minimal typhoon. It was located about 240 nautical (276 miles/444.5 km) miles south-southwest of Taipei, Taiwan near 21.6 North and 120.4 East. It was moving to the east-northeast near 14 knots (16.1 mph/26 kmh). AIRS infrared data showed that Tembin showed an eye covered by central dense overcast, as correlated by the MODIS visible imagery.

Tembin is expected to move north past Taiwan over the next couple of days, and track through the Yellow Sea. Tembin's final resting place will be a landfall in southeastern China, near the North Korea border by the weekend.

X-ray chemist solves cholera mystery: Blood group O most susceptible

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? The likelihood of becoming seriously ill from cholera depends on your blood group. It is possible to find a new remedy for the feared illness by studying the molecular structure in the toxin in the cholera bacteria.

Three to five million people are infected by cholera ever year. The mortality rate is high: one hundred thousand people die from the feared illness every year.

'Cholera depends on the blood group. Some blood groups have an increased risk of becoming seriously ill', says Professor Ute Krengel in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Oslo.

When cholera bacteria multiply in the body, they create an awful toxin called cholera toxin. The toxin must bind to the cell membrane before it can penetrate further into the intestinal cell and create trouble.

By studying the molecular structure of cholera toxins, researchers can discover how the toxins bind to intestinal cells at the level of the atom.

Krengel's goal is to find a new medicine that prevents the cholera toxin from binding to the intestine and that ensures that the toxin is harmlessly dispelled from the body.

Cholera leads to violent diarrhea. The patient can lose up to 12 litres of fluids every 24 hours. The treatment is a saline fluid replacement.

'It must be administered as soon as possible and in large quantities. If the patient is unconscious already, the saline solution must be given intravenously. Antibiotics are of no use', explains Professor Gunnar Bjune in the Institute of Health and Society at the University of Oslo.

Blood group O is the worst

The cholera bacterium is originally from Bangladesh, but in the past two centuries, it has spread to much of the world and has established a firm footing in many Asian and African countries.

'Patients with blood group O are most at risk of becoming seriously ill. Those with blood groups A, B or AB are more protected against cholera', says Ute Krengel.

The Bangladeshi population is evenly distributed between blood groups O, A and B. In Africa, most people have blood group O. Nearly everyone in the indigenous population in Latin America have group O. When cholera hits these areas, it hits especially hard.

In collaboration with the Oslo University Hospital and the Biotechnology Centre, Ute Krengel's research group studies whether the probability of becoming seriously ill with cholera depends on blood groups. By studying the molecular structure in the toxin in the cholera bacterium, it is possible to find a new remedy for the feared illness, determine how strongly the cholera toxin binds, how long it takes to bind, and how long it stays bound to receptors on the intestinal cells.

Fools the bacteria

The cholera toxin binds to small receptors on the intestinal wall. The receptors consist of small straws with attached sugar molecules. They are to protect the cells against harmful intruders. Unfortunately, the receptors can be exploited.

'We want to develop new medicines that bind to the cholera toxin so that it cannot bind to the intestinal cells.'

The cholera toxin consists of two parts. The researchers study the lower part, which binds to the receptors.

'We have discovered that the cholera toxin binds differently than previously thought.'

The toxin is a protein. Proteins are built from amino acids. The Krengel group will now study how important the various amino acids are in the binding process and which amino acids bind the most.

In order to penetrate into the intestinal cells, the cholera toxin must first get through mucous layer.

'Our results suggest that the cholera toxin uses longer to penetrate the mucous layer if the patients have blood group antibodies in the mucous.

Four out of five people have blood group antibodies in the mucous. Those with blood group O are the least protected and therefore get sicker than others.'

Harmless cholera model

In its advanced experiments, the Krengel group has created a biological model of how the cholera toxin enters intestinal cells. They do not use real cholera bacteria. Doing so would be too dangerous. Instead, they use E.coli bacteria, which is the primary model bacterium for cell biologists.

'They are easy to make and much quicker and safer to work with. We must grow large quantities in order to study the bindings', says PhD Candidate Julie Heggelund, whose background is in molecular biology.

To create artificial cholera toxins-or to be precise: to create the lower part of the toxin-she must manipulate the genes in E. coli bacteria. When she has produced the lower part, she kills the bacteria in a pressure cooker. The receptors are synthetic sugar molecules.

X-ray control

Microscopes are of no use in finding the structure of the cholera toxin and receptors: the resolution is not good enough. Researchers must rely on x-rays. X-rays have such a short wavelength that most penetrate empty space in molecules. However, before they can get started with the x-ray machine, the researchers must crystallise the toxin and receptor molecules. This is Krengel's speciality.

By interpreting the x-rays that are spread by the crystal, researchers can calculate what the structure of the atom looks like. This can be compared to sending laser light through a sieve. Studying the light that is spread by the mesh of the sieve allows researchers to calculate what the sieve looks like.

Each exposure is two-dimensional. To create a three-dimensional image, researchers irradiate the toxin crystal up to 500 times from different angles. Though the imaging only takes a few days, the interpretation of the molecular structure can take several months.

Julie Heggelund also takes such x-ray images in Grenoble. Thanks to a large x-ray machine with a circumference of nearly one kilometre, the imaging can be done in as little as two minutes.

Doubt and advocacy

A ?Northwestern University [study has] found that when people?s confidence in their beliefs is shaken, they become stronger advocates for those beliefs.? In other words, the more we challenge someone?s beliefs (even with observable and provable facts to the contrary), the more vehemently they will hold on to those beliefs.

We seem reluctant or unable to self-reflect and critically evaluate our beliefs, preferring instead to defend our ego and spare ourselves the agony of cognitive dissonance at all costs.

And we also feel better the more other people believe in the same thing ? hence the predilection for proselytizing.

There appears to be a link between doubt and advocacy too. The less confident we are about a subject or belief, the more likely we are to explain, justify and persuade others of its merits. In other words, those who most strongly try to ?convert? you are the ones whose beliefs are the shakiest. ??people evangelise to strengthen their own faltering beliefs. ? the advocacy might in fact signal that the individual is boiling over with doubt.?

Weird but feels right, no?

How does this affect how your business communicates and markets?

Do you doubt your product/service/value? How much?

How much explaining and justifying do you do on your website and printed materials?

Greenland melting breaks record four weeks before season's end

ScienceDaily (Aug. 15, 2012) ? Melting over the Greenland ice sheet shattered the seasonal record on August 8 -- a full four weeks before the close of the melting season, reports Marco Tedesco, assistant professor of Earth and atmospheric sciences at The City College of New York.

The melting season in Greenland usually lasts from June -- when the first puddles of meltwater appear -- to early-September, when temperatures cool. This year, cumulative melting in the first week in August had already exceeded the record of 2010, taken over a full season, according to Professor Tedesco's ongoing analysis.

"With more yet to come in August, this year's overall melting will fall way above the old records. That's a goliath year -- the greatest melt since satellite recording began in 1979," said Professor Tedesco.

This spells a change for the face of southern Greenland, he added, with the ice sheet thinning at its edges and lakes on top of glaciers proliferating.

Professor Tedesco noted that these changes jibe with what most of the models predict -- the difference is how quickly this seems to be happening.

To quantify the changes, he calculated the duration and extent of melting throughout the season across the whole ice sheet, using data collected by microwave satellite sensors. (The National Snow and Ice Data Center provided satellite data from the United States Air Force Defense Meteorological Satellite Program.)

This 'cumulative melting index' can be seen as a measure of the 'strength' of the melting season: the higher the index, the more melting has occurred. (The index is defined as the number of days when melting occurs multiplied by the total area subject to melting.)

Dr. Thomas Mote, Professor of Geography at the University of Georgia and colleague of Professor Tedesco, confirmed that the cumulative melt in 2012 had surpassed that of 2010 using a similar analysis.

The August 8th record differs from NASA's announcement of unprecedented melting in mid-July, reported by Professor Tedesco and other researchers. Then, they found that the Greenland ice sheet had melted over 97 percent of its surface.

"That event was exceptional in the sense that it was an extremely rare event," said Professor Tedesco. "Imagine Rio de Janeiro under a layer of snow and you get the idea."

The extreme melting detected in mid-July, on the other hand, generated liquid water that refroze after a few days. "This changed the physical properties of the snowpack -- making a slushy layer that turned into an icy crust after refreezing -- but very likely it did not add to the runoff of meltwater that makes sea levels rise."

The cumulative melting index, on the other hand, does account for water flowing to the ocean. The same meltwater can affect ice dynamics by lubricating the base of the ice sheet and speeding its slide toward the sea.

This year, Greenland experienced extreme melting in nearly every region -- the west, northwest and northeast of the continent -- but especially at high elevations. In most years, the ice and snow at high elevations in southern Greenland melt for a few days at most. This year it has already gone on for two months.

"We have to be careful because we are only talking about a couple of years and the history of Greenland happened over millennia," cautioned Professor Tedesco. "But as far as we know now, the warming that we see in the Artic is responsible for triggering processes that enhance melting and for the feedback mechanisms that keep it going. Looking over the past few years, the exception has become part of the norm."

The NASA Cryospheric Sciences Program and the National Science Foundation (NSF) sponsored this research.

The Puzzling Silence Surrounding Richard Mourdock's Consulting ...

Richard Mourdock, as you may recall, is the Tea Party candidate who defeated Richard Lugar to win the Republican Senate nomination in Indiana.? In the course of researching Mourdock?s positions, I took a look at his career to see how that may have helped shape his views. In doing so, I ran into a bit of a puzzle.

Mourdock is a former oil company geologist and coal company executive. But his most recent job before running for public office is a bit mysterious. I found at least fifty websites that say ?Mourdock founded a successful environmental consulting business? ? often in exactly those words ? but not one that gave the name of the company or said anything about its activities. A great many sites also followed wikipedia by adding that the firm provided ?various services to numerous clients.? But no one provides any details, not even the name of the firm. There is a strange gap in public information.

I?ve heard that Mourdock worked primarily for fossil fuel companies, especially coal companies in the context of coal settling ponds and potential fine coal extraction, as well as slurry assessments.? But I haven?t seen anything in writing about this.

There?s also the question of the identity of the ?successful consulting firm? that he founded. Some sleuthing by my fellow blogger, Rhead Enion, revealed a Mourdock connection with Sub-Tech Environmental Services.? It?s hard to find much information about Sub-Tech or its activities, but one of the officers was Tom Gabe.? According to the website of Gabe?s current company, Heritage Petroleum,? in 1989 Gabe formed Subsurface Technology (Sub-Tech), an environmental services and emergency spill response company servicing 33 states across the country; it was acquired by Koester Companies, Inc. in 1994.? It?s unclear what roles Gabe and Mourdock played in the operation of Sub-Tech, or how Sub-Tech related to the separately incorporated Sub-Tech Environmental Services.? Gabe and Mourdock are both prominent supporters of international missionary work, so that may have been their initial contact.

Another Sub-Tech officer, Eric B. Dodd, was the founder of Summit Civil Services, which seems to specialize in site preparation and hazardous waste issues. The relationships between Sub-Tech, Sub-Tech Environmental Services, and Summit are murky.

Finally, I also discovered that Mourdock owns a commercial photography business called TI-Images, though that seems less relevant. That business doesn?t seem to be mentioned on his website.

I?m not saying that there?s anything shady or unethical here.? Still, the gap in the public record is odd. You would expect to have a clearer public portrait of the career of a major party candidate for the Senate.? It?s almost as if the only information on the web was that Romney worked for a financial services firm, without giving Bain?s name or saying anything about its activities.

Top quality Midlothian Food and Drink promoted at this year's Foodies

Published on

Many local residents already know that Midlothian boasts a fantastic range of top-quality locally-based food and drink producers.

Now our economic development team have taken that message directly to the tens of thousands of visitors from around the globe who flock to Edinburgh at this time of year.
?
The team helped organise a Midlothian Food and Drink Exhibition at this year's ever-popular Foodies Festival which took place at Inverleith Park over the weekend. Midlothian's stand celebrated the excellence of food and drink producers and providers from across the county.
?
The stand showcased four local businesses in particular - Supernature (Gorebridge) with their selection of infused cold pressed rapeseed oils, Magic T Pot (Gorebridge) with their hand-blended organic teas, Creme de la Cupake's (Bonnyrigg) selection of bespoke cupcake flavours, and Mo-Bo-Jo's (Roslin) selling their ultimate chocolate brownies.

This project is being part-financed by the Scottish Government, Midlothian Council and the European Community Tyne Esk Leader 2007-2013 Programme.

viryaforlife: Commitment

Establishing stability in your practice creates more freedom in your life -
Christina Sell

To find?inner peace often?requires a practice, a commitment.
It is not a gift?given to?the special or lucky ones, but a choice you make.
To find inner peace, you must practice peace in every aspect of your life.

Just hearing the word ?commitment? can sometimes make even the most confident person nervous, anxious to find an exit strategy.
The truth is that most relationships require continuous commitment to take root and grow.

I will say that my yoga practice is?an ongoing relationship and it is not always sweet.

In the beginning it was just a flirt, weird and a high at the same time.
I wanted to practice every day, try new things and it was just so easy.
Like in the very beginning of a relationship. Maybe just a crush.
Or you continue to date more frequently.
You meet someone you really like and want to spend all your time with that person.
Like a carousel.
After the first year or so it started to be more challenging.
I didn`t like all the different qualities and especially not all the feelings it brought up.
I committed to my very first yogamat and continued to?join public classes.
It turned out to be a very long relationship.
A relationship?I was ready to work for.
Passionate.
Open for everything.

Stage 2 ( or 3 or 4 or 5)?are when you think this is really bad for you.
Or maybe want to quit.
You're asking yourself: maybe another practice/ workout/ style?may be better for me?
I feel so angry,?sad, insecure or depressed on my mat. Not?good enough.
Or maybe you feel?everything at the same time. Messy.
Stage 2 repeats itself a hundred times. Or more.?And it is always a breakthrough.
Hopefully you?decide to commit.
To work even more with the relationship. To grow. Expand.
You are a couple. A team. With ups and downs.
Inseparable & uniqe.
And you have to choose each other again and again and again.
After?a few years it is like a marriage.
A marriage you have to take care of. Nourish.
Discover over and over again.
Give love to.

We can turn anything we do into a practice by committing to do it with reverence.
Our commitments then become promises we make to ourselves.
Intentions we set instead of simply tasks we perform or rules we follow without much thought or contact with our essence.
Once?we find stability within, we are?free to listen to the wisdom and longing?of our?hearts.

More?about committment in the Yoga Sutra:

Yoga Sutras 1.19-1.22: Efforts and Commitment

Virya is the positive energy of ego that is the support for the faith of going in the right direction. This energy of virya puts the power behind your sense of knowing what to do. When you are strongly acting on what you know to be your correct path, that is virya. When you feel weak or uncertain, and are taking little action, that is from lack of virya. Virya is that conviction that says, "I can do it! I will do it! I have to do it"

'Selfish' DNA in animal mitochondria offers possible tool to study aging

Monday, August 13, 2012

Researchers at Oregon State University have discovered, for the first time in any animal species, a type of "selfish" mitochondrial DNA that is actually hurting the organism and lessening its chance to survive ? and bears a strong similarity to some damage done to human cells as they age.

The findings, just published in the journal PLoS One, are a biological oddity previously unknown in animals. But they may also provide an important new tool to study human aging, scientists said.

Such selfish mitochondrial DNA has been found before in plants, but not animals. In this case, the discovery was made almost by accident during some genetic research being done on a nematode, Caenorhabditis briggsae ? a type of small roundworm.

"We weren't even looking for this when we found it, at first we thought it must be a laboratory error," said Dee Denver, an OSU associate professor of zoology. "Selfish DNA is not supposed to be found in animals. But it could turn out to be fairly important as a new genetic model to study the type of mitochondrial decay that is associated with human aging."

DNA is the material that holds the basic genetic code for living organisms, and through complex biological processes guides beneficial cellular functions. Some of it is also found in the mitochondria, or energy-producing "powerhouse" of cells, which at one point in evolution was separate from the other DNA.

The mitochondria generally act for the benefit of the cell, even though it is somewhat separate. But the "selfish" DNA found in some plant mitochondria ? and now in animals ? has major differences. It tends to copy itself faster than other DNA, has no function useful to the cell, and in some cases actually harms the cell. In plants, for instance, it can affect flowering and sometimes cause sterility.

"We had seen this DNA before in this nematode and knew it was harmful, but didn't realize it was selfish," said Katie Clark, an OSU postdoctoral fellow. "Worms with it had less offspring than those without, they had less muscle activity. It might suggest that natural selection doesn't work very well in this species."

That's part of the general quandary of selfish DNA in general, the scientists said. If it doesn't help the organism survive and reproduce, why hasn't it disappeared as a result of evolutionary pressure? Its persistence, they say, is an example of how natural selection doesn't always work, either at the organism or cellular level. Biological progress is not perfect.

In this case, the population sizes of the nematode may be too small to eliminate the selfish DNA, researchers said.

What's also interesting, they say, is that the defects this selfish DNA cause in this roundworm are surprisingly similar to the decayed mitochondrial DNA that accumulates as one aspect of human aging. More of the selfish DNA is also found in the worms as they age.

Further study of these biological differences may help shed light on what can cause the mitochondrial dysfunction, Denver said, and give researchers a new tool with which to study the aging process.
