Deal reached for stopping spike in milk prices

(AP) ? The top leaders in both parties on the House and Senate Agriculture committees have agreed to a one-year extension of the 2008 farm bill that expired in October, a move that could head off a possible doubling of milk prices next month.

Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Debbie Stabenow indicated that the House could vote on the extension as early as Sunday evening, though House leaders have not yet agreed to put it on the floor. In addition to the one-year extension that has the backing of the committees, the House GOP is also considering two other extension bills ? a one-month extension and an even smaller bill that would simply extend dairy policy that expires Jan. 1.

Expiration of those dairy programs could mean higher prices at the grocery store within a few weeks. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said Americans face the prospect of paying $7 for a gallon of milk if the current dairy program lapsed and the government returned to a 1948 formula for calculating milk price supports.

A spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner said Sunday afternoon that Republican leaders had not decided how they would proceed on the farm extension. Boehner has pushed back on passage of a new five-year farm bill for months, saying there were not enough votes to bring it to the House floor after the House Agriculture Committee approved it in July. The Senate passed its version of a farm bill in June.

The prospect of the higher milk prices has motivated some action. The bipartisan extension also includes disaster assistance to farmers affected by a lingering drought this year, along with extensions to other farm programs that expired in October.

Instead of just extending current dairy policy, the extension bill includes an overhaul of dairy programs that was in both the Senate and House committee bills. The new dairy programs include a new, voluntary insurance program for dairy producers. Those who choose that new program would also have to participate in a market stabilization program that could dictate production cuts when oversupply drives down prices ? an idea that hasn't gone over well with Boehner.

In July, he called the current dairy program "Soviet-style" and said the new program would make it even worse. Large food companies that process and use dairy products have backed Boehner, saying the program could limit milk supplies and increase their costs.

Stabenow blamed Boehner for getting to the point where an extension is the only option. "The lack of action by the House Republican leadership has put us in a situation where we risk serious damage to our economy unless we pass a temporary extension," she said.

One of the reasons Boehner has balked at bringing up a farm bill is disagreement in his caucus over how much money should be cut from food stamps, which make up roughly 80 percent of the half-trillion-dollar bill's cost over five years. House Agriculture Chairman Frank Lucas, R-Okla., has unsuccessfully pushed his leadership for months to move on the legislation despite the disagreement over food aid.

On Sunday, Lucas said he hoped the extension would pass both chambers quickly as GOP leadership mulled their options.

"It is not perfect, no compromise ever is, but it is my sincere hope that it will pass the House and Senate and be signed by the president by January 1," he said.

Companies to test new drugs designed to fight many kinds of cancer

By Gina Kolata

The New York Times

For the first time ever, three pharmaceutical companies are poised to test whether new drugs can work against a wide range of cancers independently of where they originated - breast, prostate, liver, lung. The drugs go after an aberration involving a cancer gene fundamental to tumor growth. Many scientists see this as the beginning of a new genetic age in cancer research.

Great uncertainties remain, but such drugs could mean new treatments for rare, neglected cancers, as well as common ones. Merck, Roche and Sanofi are racing to develop their own versions of a drug they hope will restore a mechanism that normally makes badly damaged cells self-destruct and could potentially be used against half of all cancers.

No pharmaceutical company has ever conducted a major clinical trial of a drug in patients who have different kinds of cancer, researchers and federal regulators say.

"This is a taste of the future in cancer drug development," said Dr. Otis Webb Brawley, the chief medical and scientific officer of the American Cancer Society. "I expect the organ from which the cancer came from will be less important in the future and the molecular target more important," he added.

And this has major implications for cancer philanthropy, experts say. Advocacy groups should shift from fundraising for particular cancers to pushing for research aimed at many kinds of cancer at once, Brawley said.

At the heart of this search for new cancer drugs are patients like Joe Bellino, who was a post office clerk until his cancer made him too sick to work.

Seven years ago, he went into the hospital for hernia surgery, only to learn he had liposarcoma, a rare cancer of fat cells. A large tumor was wrapped around a cord that connects the testicles to the abdomen. "I was shocked," he said in an interview this summer.

Companies have long ignored liposarcoma, seeing no market for drugs to treat a cancer that strikes so few. But it is ideal for testing Sanofi's drug because the tumors nearly always have the exact genetic problem the drug was meant to attack - a fusion of two large proteins.

If the drug works, it should bring these raging cancers to a halt. Then Sanofi would test the drug on a broad range of cancers with a similar genetic alteration. But if the drug fails against liposarcoma, Sanofi will reluctantly admit defeat.

"For us, this is a go/no-go situation," said Laurent Debussche, a Sanofi scientist who leads the company's research on the drug.

Health authorities in the United States and Europe worried that the medicines might have unexpected effects.

"Drugs of this type had never been given to a human being," Dr. Gwen Nichols of Roche said. The studies looked only at safety, but Nichols said there were encouraging hints that the drugs might be working. In biopsies and scans, cancer cells appeared to be dying.

Rigorous efficacy studies are next. If they are successful, they will be followed by clinical trials across cancer types.

Recently, Merck began its study to find a safe dose. It is enrolling only patients with acute myelogenous leukemia.

Once the company finds the best dose, it plans to give its drug to just 15 to 30 patients and look for efficacy. And if the drug fails to do its job?

"Then we will not bring the drug forward," Gilliland said.

Sanofi is in much the same position. It just started safety tests in Europe. Medical centers in the United States will be added next year. Like Merck, it will focus solely on patients who are most likely to respond to its own drug - in this case, patients with liposarcoma like Bellino.

Bellino said over the summer that he hoped to be among the first to try a new drug that could combat liposarcoma. When the call goes out for study subjects, he said, "I will be waving my hands."

But the test will come too late for him. He died from his cancer Nov. 13.

a new era

No pharmaceutical company has ever conducted a major clinical trial of a drug in patients who have different kinds of cancer, both researchers and federal regulators say.

Stress Management: Anxiety Myths Debunked!

Stress Management: Anxiety Myths Debunked!

By Corrie Pikul

Learn the truths behind these popular misconceptions (one will make you breathe easier, for sure).

  • Twitching Eyelids

<strong>Myth: </strong>"A twitching eyelid is a sure sign that you?ve got too much on your plate." <strong>Fact:</strong> Stress could be causing your eyelid to make you look like an overenthusiastic flirt -- but so could fatigue or even dry eyes, which affects half of women over 40, says <a href="http://www.njeyedoctor.com/ourdoctors.html">Anne Sumers, MD</a>, a clinical correspondent for the <a href="http://www.aao.org/">American Academy of Ophthalmology</a>. Sumers says that while ophthalmologists like her see at least three patients every week with eyelid spasms, there?s no clear consensus on what causes them. However, experts are sure that these twitches aren?t a sign of a serious problem. Sumers says that it may help to get more rest, to try lubricating eye drops or to take a vacation from work -- but even if you do nothing, she says the spasms should go away on their own in four to six weeks (at the most).

  • Deep Breaths

<strong>Myth: </strong>"Taking deep, slow breaths can help you calm down when you're feeling panicked and overwhelmed." <strong>Fact:</strong> It makes sense that when you're short of breath, you should try to compensate with a little extra oxygen, right? The problem is that when you are experiencing an intensely trying situation -- waiting to hear the results of a serious medical test, during severe turbulence on an airplane, or when you slice your thumb with a bread knife just as your brunch guests pull into the driveway -- you're probably already taking in too much oxygen and could be at risk of hyperventilating, says <a href="http://faculty.smu.edu/ameuret/html/peopleFacultyAM.html">Alicia Esperanza Meuret, PhD</a>, associate professor of psychology at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. <a href="http://bmo.sagepub.com/content/27/5/731.abstract">In her research on patients who suffer from panic disorders and asthma</a>, <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703652104576122392361319596.html">Meuret has found that a more effective way to calm down is to take shallow, regular and slow breaths</a> through the nose (not the mouth, which makes it too easy to suck in more air than you actually need). "Imagine a beach where the water is sliding in and out in time with your breath," she says. This may feel slightly uncomfortable at first, as you battle the impulse to fill your lungs, but Meuret says you should start to feel more relaxed after practicing a few times.

  • Ulcers

<strong>Myth: </strong>"You can develop an ulcer from worrying too much." <strong>Fact: </strong>Since the 1980s, <a href="http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/hpylori/">we've known that the most common cause of a peptic ulcer is actually an infection of H. pylori bacteria</a>. So why do so many of us still associate ulcers with stress? Here's the deal: Excessive use of OTC painkillers such as aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen -- the stress-busters we rely on when we're suffering from tension headaches, tight shoulders or a put-upon, aching back -- can also cause ulcers or make them worse, explains Patricia Raymond, MD, a fellow of the <a href="http://gi.org/">American College of Gastroenterology</a>. These NSAIDs can break down the mucous membranes that line the stomach, allowing gastrointestinal acid to splash up and cause burning pain. Raymond adds that alcohol -- another popular de-stressing remedy -- can exacerbate an existing problem.

  • Nerves

<strong>Myth: </strong>"Frazzled nerves make us see the worst in every situation." <strong>Fact:</strong> Stress often brings out our inner optimist, concluded researchers from the University of Southern California -- but that's not always helpful. In an article published in the February 2012 journal <a href="http://www.psychologicalscience.org/index.php/publications/journals/current_directions">Current Directions in Psychological Science</a>, <a href="http://cdp.sagepub.com/content/21/1/36">psychologists reviewed studies in which people were put in tense situations</a> (for, example, being told to hold their hand in ice water or to give a speech), <a href="http://www.psychologicalscience.org/index.php/news/releases/stress-changes-how-people-make-decisions.html">and found that when these stressed-out participants had to make a decision, they focused more on positive outcomes</a>. So if an overworked, strung-out person was trying to decide whether to move to a new city for a boyfriend she might focus on the "pro" of romantic happiness over the "con" of leaving a job she liked. Whenever possible, wait to tackle big decisions until you're feeling your most relaxed -- like after a bath or on a lazy Saturday afternoon.

  • Gray Hair

<strong>Myth:</strong> "Stress doesn't really have any effect on your hair." <strong> Fact:</strong> The good news is that <a href="http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=fact-or-fiction-stress-causes-gray-hair">excessive physical or emotional stress hasn't been proven to make hair turn gray</a> -- or curly or frizzy, for that matter. <a href="http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/11/071109194053.htm">The unfortunate news is that it could cause hair to fall out.</a> Major stressors such as illness, injury, surgery or the loss of a loved one can affect your hair's growth in two different ways: The hair might stop growing and lay dormant, then fall out several months after the life-upending event (it will grow back in half a year or so). Or, it could stimulate the white blood cells to attack the hair follicles, causing the hair to fall out in patches (this may require special treatment by a doctor). <a href="http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/stress-and-hair-loss/AN01442">In both cases, the hair loss isn't usually permanent.</a>

AP Exclusive: Documents raise doubts in Nazi probe

BERLIN (AP) ? The case of an 87-year-old Philadelphia man accused by Germany of serving as an SS guard at Auschwitz has largely centered on whether he was stationed at the part of the death camp used as a killing machine for Jews.

Johann "Hans" Breyer ? while admitting he was an Auschwitz guard ? insists he was never there.

World-War II-era documents obtained by The Associated Press indicate otherwise.

The files provided by the U.S. Department of Justice in response to an AP request are now in the hands of German authorities, and could provide the legal basis for charging him as an accessory to the murder of hundreds of thousands of Jews in the Nazi death camp.

The retired toolmaker told the AP in September, when German authorities confirmed he was under investigation, that he was always at Auschwitz I, a smaller camp used largely for slave labor, and never entered Auschwitz II, also known as Auschwitz-Birkenau, where about 90 percent of the 1.1 to 1.5 million Jews and others killed in the camp were murdered.

The U.S. Justice Department documents tell a different story. One SS administrative document specifically notes that Breyer was an SS guard at Auschwitz II. Another indicates he served with a unit of the SS Totenkopf, or "death's head," that was assigned to guard Birkenau.

Kurt Schrimm, the head of the special German prosecutors' office responsible for investigating Nazi-era crimes, which has recommended charges be brought against Breyer in Germany, would not comment on specific pieces of evidence. But he said his office felt there was a strong enough evidence to prove that Breyer served in Birkenau.

"American authorities have been very cooperative in this case and have turned over a lot of evidence," he said.

Breyer did not respond to requests for comment; his attorney, Dennis Boyle, said that he was aware of the documents but would not comment on their possible significance. "We are continuing our investigation and have no comment at this time," Boyle said.

The U.S. Department of Justice used the documents as part of its unsuccessful decade-long legal efforts to have Breyer stripped of his American citizenship and deported. The U.S. case centered upon issues such as whether Breyer had lied on his immigration papers and whether he had obtained U.S. citizenship through his American-born mother. That legal saga ended in 2003, with a ruling that allowed him to stay in the United States, mainly on the grounds that he had joined the SS as a minor and could therefore not be held legally responsible for participation in it.

The German investigation, by contrast, tries to prove that Breyer was a death camp guard, and the documents are now being used to support that case.

The dossier is now with prosecutors in the town of Weiden, near where Breyer last lived in Germany. The prosecutors are reviewing whether there is enough evidence to charge him with accessory to the murder of least 344,000 Jews as Schrimm's office has recommended, and have him extradited from the U.S.

For decades after the war, German prosecutors were only been able to convict former Nazi guards if they could find evidence of a specific crime. But with the case of former Ohio autoworker John Demjanjuk, the legal thinking changed: Prosecutors were able to successfully argue that evidence of service as a death camp guard alone was enough to convict a suspect of accessory to murder.

Demjanjuk always denied being a guard anywhere. He died in March while appealing his conviction on 28,060 counts of accessory to murder. Breyer, however, acknowledges that he served with SS Totenkopf guard units ? although not the one that served at Birkenau ? and was stationed both at Buchenwald, a concentration camp located in Germany, and Auschwitz.

"I didn't kill anybody, I didn't rape anybody ? and I don't even have a traffic ticket here," he told the AP in an interview at his home in northeastern Philadelphia in September. "I didn't do anything wrong."

He said he was aware of what was going on inside the death camp, but did not witness it himself. "We could only see the outside, the gates," he said. The interview was the only one Breyer has given to the media.

Breyer was born in 1925 in what was then Czechoslovakia to an ethnic German father and an American mother, Katharina, who was born in Philadelphia. Slovakia became a separate state in 1939 under the influence of Nazi Germany. In 1942, the Waffen SS embarked on a drive to recruit ethnic Germans there. Breyer joined at age 17 and was called up in 1943.

In testimony in 2002, he told the U.S. District Court in Pennsylvania that he had been sent to Auschwitz from Buchenwald in May 1944, then was given leave in August and returned home. He testified that he stayed in hiding in and around his home until the Soviet army closed in.

According to Breyer, the town's mayor provided him a letter asking for authorities to excuse his desertion because he had been needed on the family farm. Breyer testified that the letter worked with Nazi authorities, and that he was able to eventually rejoin his unit fighting outside Berlin in the final weeks of the war.

The documents, however, call his testimony into question, suggesting he was at Auschwitz through the rest of 1944 and into 1945, which would have meant he was there during the time some 426,000 Hungarian Jews were deported to Auschwitz, 320,000 of whom went directly into the gas chambers in Auschwitz-Birkenau.

A form from SS administrative authorities, filled out on Jan. 17, 1945 in Pressburg, which today is Bratislava, Slovakia, indicates that the previous day Breyer was there in person and applied for ? and was granted ? financial assistance for his parents' farm while he was away serving in the SS.

And it notes that Breyer at the time of the application was based at "Auschwitz 2."

In a 2002 case in the United States, the judge questioned the trustworthiness of the document ? noting among other things that the birthdates of both of Breyer's parents were wrong, and the size of his family farm was written down as double what it actually was. In his testimony, Breyer suggested the document was "a fraud."

But a court expert testified there was no evidence of a forgery. And U.S. federal prosecutors noted that Breyer's date of birth, date of induction into the SS, profession, parents' names and hometown are all correct. They also cited Breyer's first interrogation in 1991, when he told investigators he had gone home after "they granted me vacation end January '45" ? which fits with the timeline of the document.

In the current German case, Thomas Walther, a former prosecutor in Schrimm's office, said it was also plausible to think that Breyer would have made his parents seem older, and his farm larger, in order to bolster the case for receiving assistance.

If nothing else, he said, the document and other evidence raise enough suspicion for prosecutors to file charges.

"Where this evidence fits has to be decided at trial, regardless of what the U.S. judge said the German court needs to decide," said Walther, who is now in private practice and represents several family members of Jewish victims at Auschwitz who have joined the investigation as co-plaintiffs as allowed under German law.

Weiden prosecutor Gerhard Heindl, who is heading the current investigation, said he could not comment on any evidence.

Another document, an April 26, 1944 letter to the SS administration in Pressburg from the leader of the pro-Nazi Slovakian "Deutsche Partei," makes a case to have Breyer excused from his duties to help on his family's farm, noting that he was assigned at the time to the 8th Company of the SS Totenkopf in Auschwitz.

The 8th Company was stationed at Auschwitz II during the time Breyer is alleged to have been there, according to camp orders cited by Raul Hilberg in his book "The Destruction of the European Jews."

A U.S. Army intelligence file on Breyer, obtained by the AP, from a 1951 immigration background check also lists him as being with the SS Totenkopf in Auschwitz as late as Dec. 29, 1944 ? four months after he said he deserted. The Army Investigative Records Repository file was obtained by the AP from the National Archives through a Freedom of Information Act request.

"Clearly we can't say what the result will be at the end of a long presentation of evidence to a court ? that's not our job," Walther said. "But our contention is with this evidence the state prosecutors must file charges."

Sudan's Bashir dances at first rally since surgery

KHARTOUM (Reuters) - Sudan's President Omar Hassan al-Bashir danced, waved his walking stick and delivered a defiant speech on Thursday at his first rally since undergoing surgery in Saudi Arabia and withstanding what officials called an attempted coup.

Diplomats and Sudanese bloggers have speculated about the 68-year-old veteran leader's health after he appeared less frequently in public in recent months.

He did not attend an economic conference in Khartoum on November 27, the kind of event he has used in the past to attack a U.S. trade embargo on the country.

On Thursday, Bashir opened a new oilfield in western Sudan which the government hopes will mitigate the loss of crucial oil reserves since South Sudan seceded last year.

"To the enemies of Sudan who said that Sudan would collapse after the loss of oil to the South, we say our livelihood does not come from America or Israel or Europe but from God," he told thousands of cheering people gathered at the Hadida oilfield in the Darfur region.

Over his 23 years in power, Bashir has weathered armed rebellions, soaring inflation, years of U.S. trade sanctions, an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court and student protests as well as the secession of the south last year.

He has faced popular discontent over an economic crisis and divisions within his ruling circle. The government arrested former spy chief Salah Gosh and twelve others last month, accusing them of trying to stage a coup.

He had an operation on his vocal cords in Qatar in August and went to Saudi Arabia in November for what officials described as minor surgery.

The televised speech on Thursday lasted less than ten minutes, shorter than previous ones, but Bashir also performed his trademark celebratory dance for the first time in several months.

He did not refer directly to the alleged coup attempt.

"Let's leave the conflicts and problems because conflicts only make our enemies stronger... Let's sit down together and solve all problems," said Bashir.

Darren Collison Buzzer Beater: Mavericks Guard Sends Game Into Overtime, But OKC Wins (VIDEO)

It's unlikely Rick Carlisle drew it up this way. But it's also unlikely he cares.

With Carlisle's Mavericks trailing the Thunder, 98-95, with 2.2 seconds remaining, Dallas' Shawn Marion tried getting the inbound pass to Vince Carter on the wing. But the ball was deflected. Marion pounced on the ball, quickly took one dribble and then passed it to Darren Collison, who was standing beyond the 3-point line.

Without time running out, Collison jumped as he caught the ball and threw up a wild shot in mid-air.

In. Free basketball.

The officials reviewed the buzzer beater and confirmed that it was a made basket, sending the game into overtime.

Unfortunately for the Mavs, Russell Westbrook took over in the extra five minutes scoring eight of the team's 13 points as Oklahoma City went on to win 111-105.

Collison finished with 32 points and even though it didn't win the game, his buzzer beater was arguably the highlight of the game.

Getting Acquainted With the Various Kinds of Surveillance Technology

The advancements in surveillance technology have led to the introduction of innovative audio and video recording equipment for personal and professional use. You can purchase everything from an audio recorder that will fit in your hand, to a video recorder that can easily be concealed and accessed online.

Surveillance technology takes in numerous types of applications and devices. These tools used for your protection and safety can be used inside or out. They can be portable instruments that are used at several locations or they can be devices that remain stationary.

One type of surveillance technology that is commonly used by both homeowners and business owners is a device that makes it possible to record or transmit audio or video information. You can decide which type is more useful to you. When it comes to the security of your home or business, you can never be too careful.

Recording devices or video cameras used for surveillance are generally used to make sure that nothing illegal or inappropriate is taking place on the premises. These security items are often hidden from sight. To do anything else would defeat the purpose of them. The prices for audio and video equipment can vary by brand name. In most cases, they can have a costly price tag. You can find equipment that comes with numerous types of features. Decide what is most important to you in terms of features before you start your shopping.

It may be your external environment that requires surveillance technology, and not the internal area of your house or workplace. For your external surroundings, small hidden cameras can be strategically placed to monitor specific sections of the property. These cameras make use of digital video recording (DVR) in order to capture video images. This allows for an easier system of transmission. It also makes for easier storage and portability.

If you look around, you will find plenty of places where a small recording device can be concealed. Some examples of these include trees, lamps, benches and posts. You might even be able to place one inside of your satellite dish. This type of security measure is often designed to be motion activated. The way it works is that the instrument starts to record as soon as it detects motion in the nearby vicinity.

While outdoor surveillance equipment is popular to keep watch over a residence or a business, indoor systems have also gained in popularity. Concealed cameras and video recording equipment, sometimes referred to as ?nanny cams?, are very beneficial for those people who have babysitters coming into their homes to look after their children.

Nanny cams can be hidden almost anywhere and they can go a long way in protecting your youngsters. Those who suspect a problem with their employees may decide to use one in order to catch a person in the act of doing something wrong.

Keep protected. Learn more about surveillance technology at: http://www.surveillancetechnology.com.

Students' online and offline social networks can predict course grades

Dec. 27, 2012 ? Ben-Gurion University of the Negev's (BGU) Social Networks Security Research Group in its Department of Information Systems Engineering has developed a novel method to predict how well or badly a student will perform in an academic course.

The information can be used to determine which students need the most help, as well as which ones excel and might be guided to further study or careers in that subject area. The paper, "Predicting Student Exam Scores by Analyzing Social Network Data," was presented earlier this month at the Advanced Media Technology Conference in Macau, Hong Kong.

According to co-author and Ph.D. student Michael Fire, "While most papers about social network analysis deal solely with information gathered online, this study draws some of the information from the real world -- social interactions which were conducted off the grid."

The researchers analyzed data from a BGU course that included assignments submitted online and Web site logs (containing 10,759 entries) to construct social networks of explicit and implicit cooperation among the students. The implicit connections are used to model all the social interactions that happened "offline" among the students: e-mails with questions, conversations in the lab while preparing the assignments and even course forums.

"These connections were very important, as we sought to model the social interactions within the student body," Fire explains.

In addition to analyzing the online submissions of the students who had to work in pairs or in groups, they also tracked login time and computer usage. For instance, if two students submitted their assignments from the same computer, it was a likely indication that the two had worked together to complete the assignment. If two students submitted assignments from different computers, but one right after the other on more than one occasion, the authors gave a value to that data, as well.

"One explanation for what we discovered is that your friends influence your grade in the course, so, if you pick your friends well, then you will get a higher grade," Fire says. "Alternatively, social networks in courses offer conditions whereby good students will pair with other good students, and similarly weaker ones will pair with weaker students."

Childhood Obesity, Celebrities, and Eating Disorders (Part 1)

Beyonce

Consider the strange case of Beyonc?, who seems to be working both sides of the street in the childhood obesity neighborhood. Early in 2011, the world learned that the singing star, following in the footsteps of other celebrities like Jamie Oliver and Ellen DeGeneres, would lend her talents to the cause of quelling childhood obesity and averting a public health crisis. First Lady Michelle Obama appreciated the help for her ?Let?s Move!? campaign, and of course Beyonc??s song ?Move Your Body? fit right in.

Designed to be played in middle schools, the singer?s exercise demonstration video featured an already existing song, rewritten for this project. Neon Limelight called it ?an energetic track urging folks to get up and shake what their mama gave them to keep the pounds off.?

As journalist Melanie Warner noted, ?the singer Beyonc? chomps on an apple (while dancing!)? and although she didn?t say it, what this reader inferred is that it might be a good way to choke to death. But maybe that isn?t what Warner meant, although she doesn?t think celebrities who aspire to be role models should ever represent junk food or sugar-sweetened beverages. Warner writes:

Kids old enough to remember will also recall something else Beyonc? told them to do ? drink Pepsi. That was in 2002 and 2003 when the pop star was a Pepsi (PEP) spokesperson, appearing in multiple TV ads, like this one where she sings about the ?joy of Pepsi.?

Although the ?Move Your Body? video wasn?t scheduled to premier until May, there was plenty of advance press, not all of it favorable. Mikaela Conley of ABC News pointed out that Beyonc? danced in her ?signature stilettos,? and although she didn?t say it, what this reader inferred is that it might be a good way to break an ankle. In fact, wearing high heels for plain old everyday walking, and not even for dancing, has long been discouraged by orthopedic surgeons and podiatrists. The distortion forced upon the rest of the body by high heels does not offer the body a single benefit.

And this was not the only objection. The prominent physician David L. Katz went on record as doubting the usefulness of celebrity participation because it can have unintended consequences.

Conley spoke with Dr. Jennifer Helmcamp of Scott & White Hospital in Austin, TX, who is both a pediatrician and an obesity expert. Dr. Helmcamp places much more credence in the importance of parental influence, believing that children will pretty much do what they see their parents do, including indulging in very detrimental eating habits. She was quoted as saying:

Celebrity campaigns primarily increase awareness? Michelle Obama has modeled behaviors such as planting gardens, exercising and talks about what she does at home to keep her kids healthy. Adding someone like Beyonc? to the campaign is great because she is a very visible influence on older children and teens.

Yes, and by shilling for a soft drink, what behavior is the influential Beyonc? modeling? Like Dr. Katz, Dr. Wendy Oliver-Pyatt also expressed ambivalence about the celebrity connection, and mentioned the sometimes unexpected results that can stem from good intentions. She is uncomfortable with the whole notion of labeling kids as overweight or obese, and for a very definite reason:

We only want to do intervention on modifiable behavior and weight is not a modifiable behavior.

Right, because weight is not a behavior at all. A behavior is something that a person does, like comfort eating, and that is modifiable.

(to be continued? )

Your responses and feedback are welcome!

Police union seeks more help for Newtown officers

(AP) ? Some of the police officers who responded to the school shooting in Newtown are so traumatized they haven't been working, but they have to use sick time and could soon be at risk of going without a paycheck, a union official said Wednesday.

The union, Council 15 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, is seeking more generous assistance in talks with the town's insurer. It is also reaching out to lawmakers and the governor's office with proposals to modify state law and expand workers' compensation benefits for officers who witness horrific crime scenes.

"The insurer for the town has taken a position that these officers are entitled to only what the statute allows. Unfortunately for these officers, the statute doesn't allow any benefits," said Eric Brown, an attorney for the union, which represents nearly 4,000 officers around Connecticut.

A gunman shot his way into Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dec. 14 and slaughtered 20 first-graders and six educators. The gunman, who had also killed his mother that morning, committed suicide as police arrived.

Brown said that the number of officers "critically affected" by the tragedy is below 15 and that a small number of them are not currently working.

A spokesman for Newtown police, Lt. George Sinko, said the officers are generally holding up well.

"A couple of them are taking it harder than some of the other ones," he said. "The things that the officers had to experience underscores the need to support them in every way possible."

Officials with the town's insurer, the Connecticut Interlocal Risk Management Agency, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Authorities say the victims were shot with a high-powered, military-style rifle loaded with ammunition designed to inflict maximum damage. All the victims had been shot at least twice, the medical examiner said, and as many as 11 times. Two victims were pronounced dead at a hospital, while all others died in the school.

In the past, advocates have pushed to change the statutes on workers' compensation, which currently include provisions for officers who suffer mental impairment as the result of using or being subjected to deadly force ? but not for those who witness crime scenes with mass casualties.

Concerns about the potential cost to cities and towns have been an obstacle, but the issue is likely to resurface in the next legislation session, said state Rep. Stephen Dargan, a West Haven Democrat who is co-chairman of the legislature's public safety committee.

"We don't want it to be used in an abusive way, but the circumstances are so horrific in Newtown. We need to protect those first responders and give them all the help we can give them," he said.

Firefighters who responded to the scene at Sandy Hook also have described struggling with feelings of frustration and anguish, but said they were grateful they were spared from witnessing the scene that greeted police inside the school.

Brown said outside agencies have been meeting demands for counseling services, but it will be important to ensure support is in place over the long term. The officers who are not working also could use up available sick time by early January, he said.

"The emotional loads they're carrying far exceed anything they could imagine," Brown said.

Police have yet to offer a possible motive for gunman Adam Lanza's rampage.

Expansive memorials throughout the small New England town have become gathering points for residents and visitors alike. A steady stream of well-wishers have taken pictures, dropped off toys and fought back tears at a huge sidewalk memorial in the center of Newtown's Sandy Hook section that is filled with stuffed animals, poems, flowers, posters and cards.

Newtown officials plan to convert into a memorial the countless mementos paying tribute to the schoolhouse victims. Thousands of flowers, letters, signs, photos, candles, teddy bears and other items at sites around town will be turned into soil and blocks to be used in a memorial, The News Times in nearby Danbury reported.

And, Merry Christmas in Heaven! - Mother Grieving Loss of Child

Merry Christmas!

And, Merry Christmas in Heaven!

Merry "Ellie" Prince

Ellie and our son Rollin, Ellie's daddy!

We can't wait to see our dollbaby today!!! So thankful for God's rays of sunshine into our broken hearts...

Merry Christmas everyone!

And Merry Christmas to our angels in Heaven, surrounding Jesus's throne, ever enthralled with His love poured out for them that drew them to His side when they were helpless to rescue themselves... So thankful God loved each of them, and each of us, enough to send His Son over 2000 years ago today...

In the beginning was the Word,?and the Word was with God,?and the Word was God.??He was with God in the beginning.??Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made.??In Him was life,?and that life was the light?of all mankind.??The light shines in the darkness,?and the darkness has not overcome?it.

John 1:1-5 (NIV)?

(Some capitalizations, mine)

The Darkness did not overcome our children, all because of Jesus.

I notice some very interesting changes have occurred over the past 40 years Qaida! :D It'll be fun exploring the reasons behind them at some point XD

Nonetheless, i shall commence working on a character immediately!

EDIT: Loved that little excerpt about Talon and the order of Riena also :3

Ah~ And here I was beginning to lose hope that a good roleplay could possibly be posted on this site~ I will be working on an assassin character, I believe. Though admittedly, I am intrigued by the Order of Vyldi as well! We'll see how it turns out~

I fell into that purgatory between waking and dreaming, the transient space existing between conscious and subconscious. It was beautiful... ephemeral. And I could not help but wish to stay forever.

So, this RP seems to be a sequel to a previous story, or something. If this is the case, are only people from the previous RP allowed to join, or can someone who wasn't a part of it participate?

EDIT: If the answer to the above question is yes, then I'd like to ask a few questions about the story and setting, and a possible character idea. Thanks!

Hey guys! Thanks so much for the interest!

So to answer Tsukia's question, I was originally only going to have the old RP'ers from the first RP allowed, and a couple of friends, but then I decided not to at last minute.

So, this is an open RP and anyone can join, I'm just being a little bit more picky than usual is all. I want good writers, (don't worry, I'm not hard core or anything, I just want to be sure you can write a lot and its readable :) had too many players that write a couple sentences or a paragraph and then that's it for their post. I want some long stuff!)

I can't wait to see your characters!!!

The Almighty Centi has arrived, bask in his modest yet majestic powers of.... taco... O.o

Anyway, that said, hi everyone! :D This RP looks great, can't wait to get started. Qaida, I can probably work on a character a little later. I'm kind of running a few things at once here. lol

Only after the world is set ablaze may people finally see the light...

Alright, so for one of the members, I'm going to put up a new Topic and in there I'll give a quick synopsis of the last RP, what the old dragons were to the world of Lastra, what dragons in this world mean and how they play a role and all that good stuff.

So! Before we start posting later on this week, please be sure to read through the Topic so everyone is on the same page ;) Enjoy guys!! Thanks!

Oh wow~ That took a bit longer than I thought it would take! (I'm sorry my sample is a bit shorter than a normal post would be, but I hope that showing you around 750 words should be enough?) The sample may seem a bit random but once put into context, a lot of what she fears/sees at night she will cover rather well during the day. So I wanted to give a nice comparison~ I was unsure what to put for the dragon so that new topic would really help @w@ Hope you like her/find the character acceptable~
