California can't catch up in 27-9 loss to USC

Zach Maynard limped off the Coliseum field after Morgan Breslin sacked him one last time. California's quarterback never really got moving against Southern California's formidable defense, and his Golden Bears stumbled out to a 1-3 start to a once-promising season.

Matt Barkley passed for 192 yards and threw two touchdown passes to Marqise Lee, and No. 13 USC bounced back from its first loss with a 27-9 victory over Cal on Saturday.

Lee had 11 catches for 94 yards, Silas Redd rushed for 158 yards and a score and the Trojans (3-1, 1-1 Pac-12) methodically rolled to their ninth consecutive win over the Golden Bears (1-3, 0-1) in the schools' 100th meeting.

Keenan Allen had nine catches for 93 yards for the Bears, who managed just 250 total yards and couldn't get into the Coliseum end zone, failing to build on an encouraging effort in last week's narrow loss at Ohio State.

"We've played a lot of good teams, but we've got to be ready to make a statement for the rest of the year," said Maynard, who struggled to 173 yards passing with two interceptions. "I told our guys we can't lose anymore."

Cal's defense could feel good about shutting down All-America receiver Robert Woods and managing two interceptions against Barkley, who couldn't beat the Bears on any long downfield throws. None of it mattered much when Cal's offense was mostly shut down, with the Bears' three touted tailbacks combining for 75 yards rushing on 17 attempts.

At least kicker Vincenzo D'Amato shook off last week's struggles at Ohio State to hit three field goals for Cal, but even that rankled Allen.

"It's very discouraging," Allen said. "(Finishing drives) is something we talk about all week, and it's something we have to work on. You can't win a game with field goals."

Cal coach Jeff Tedford has never won at the Coliseum, and the Bears haven't beaten USC since their memorable triple-overtime win in Strawberry Canyon in 2003. Cal lost its conference opener for the fourth straight season.

"The defense made its share of plays, got some turnovers, but also let some big plays get by," Tedford said.

Did they ever: Curtis McNeal rushed 115 yards for the Trojans, giving them two 100-yard rushers in a game for the first time since 2008.

A week after the preseason No. 1 team got shut out in the second half of a 21-14 loss at Stanford, USC drained any lingering suspense from this matchup with a methodical 75-yard drive that consumed more than half of the fourth quarter, capped by Lee's 3-yard TD catch with 5:56 to play.

"I was surprised, because they didn't have a running attack the previous game, and the previous game before that," Cal cornerback Steve Williams said. "They came out here and pounded the ball."

Barkley struggled to find Woods, who had only five catches for 30 yards, yet still went 22 for 34 and kept the Trojans moving on several long drives. Center Khaled Holmes' return to the lineup undoubtedly helped, although the senior limped off the field again in the fourth quarter.

"I'm not looking out every week to get stats or get a flashy game," said Barkley, who threw two interceptions for the second straight week. "I think we left a lot of points on the field ... but we were moving the ball today. If defenses are going to stay back, play a cover-2 shell and force us to run, that's what we've got to do."

Stanford shut out USC for the final 41 minutes last week, but the Trojans marched straight downfield against Cal before Barkley threw an end-zone interception to Williams. They ended their scoring drought on their next drive with Redd's 33-yard TD run, the former Penn State star's fourth score in four games at USC.

"We hit them in the mouth from the first snap, and we didn't try to let our foot off the pedal," Redd said.

D'Amato, who missed three field goal attempts in Columbus last week, missed an early 35-yard try at the Coliseum, but hit his second attempt.

USC appeared to be in position to take control after Lee's TD catch capped a sharp drive early in the second quarter, but Barkley threw his second interception on a tipped pass deep in Cal territory shortly before halftime. The Trojans added a late field goal for a 17-3 lead - not much considering they outgained Cal 300-98.

Cal pulled within 17-9 midway through the third quarter, and McNeal's fumble led to a drive deep into USC territory - but Cal burned two timeouts on the drive before T.J. McDonald picked off Maynard's throw at the 7. After Andre Heidari made his second field goal and the USC defense forced another three-and-out, the Trojans embarked on their clock-consuming drive.

"I think it's great the way we bounced back," Barkley said. "We shut out what people were saying about us."

New ways to protect female fertility

ScienceDaily (Sep. 21, 2012) ? New research offers hope to women whose fertility has been compromised by the side-effects of cancer therapy or by premature menopause.

In a study published in Molecular Cell, researchers from the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute (WEHI), Monash University and Prince Henry's Institute of Medical Research found that two proteins, PUMA and NOXA, cause the death of egg cells in the ovaries. Blocking the activity of the proteins may lead to new strategies to protect women's fertility.

The team, including Associate Professor Jeffrey Kerr from Monash, Associate Professor Clare Scott, Dr Ewa Michalak and Professor Andreas Strasser from WEHI and Dr Karla Hutt and Professor Jock Findlay from PHI, focused their studies on egg cells called primordial follicle oocytes, which provide each woman's lifetime supply of eggs. Low numbers of these egg cells can also cause early menopause.

Associate Professor Clare Scott, an oncologist at The Royal Melbourne and Royal Women's hospitals, said the research showed that when the DNA of egg cells is damaged following exposure to radiation or chemotherapy, PUMA and NOXA trigger the death of the damaged eggs, leading to infertility in many female cancer patients.

"PUMA and NOXA can trigger cell death, and have been found to be necessary for the death of many different cell types in response to DNA damage," Associate Professor Scott said.

"This removal of damaged cells is a natural process that is essential to maintaining health but, for women undergoing cancer treatment, can be devastating when it leads to infertility."

Associate Professor Kerr said that when these egg-producing cells were missing the PUMA protein they did not die after being exposed to radiation therapy.

"This might ordinarily be cause for concern because you want damaged egg cells to die so as not to produce abnormal offspring," he said.

"To our great surprise we found that not only did the cells survive being irradiated, they were able to repair the DNA damage they had sustained and could be ovulated and fertilised, producing healthy offspring. When the cells were also missing the NOXA protein, there was even better protection against radiation."

Future treatments could block the function of PUMA, preventing egg cell death in patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiation.

Professor Jock Findlay, head of the Female Reproductive Biology Group at PHI, said the study could also have implications for delaying menopause.

"We know that the timing of menopause is influenced by how many egg cells a female has," he said. "Interventions that slow the loss of egg cells from the ovaries could delay premature menopause, prolonging female fertility, such a treatment could have the potential to reduce menopause-associated health conditions, such as osteoporosis and heart disease."

The research was supported by National Health and Medical Research Council, Cancer Council Victoria, the Victorian Cancer Agency, the US Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the US National Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society, and the Victorian Government.

My Love Hate Relationship with the Amber Teething Necklace ...

addieteething 300x240 The Amber Teething Necklace: From Love to Sheer HorrorWhen Addie started teething as a baby, I wanted to give an amber teething necklace a try. I have never used them for either of our sons and didn?t know much about them.

I was offered to review one and we gave it a try. I loved it, not only did it seem to really help with Addison?s misery, but it was also adorable. Where ever we went she would get compliments on her bling.

We never really took it off of her, and with her molars making an entrance into our life these past couple weeks, I figured we should continue using it. It had been so much of a life saver all these months, why not continue right?

Tuesday night after leaving the grocery store as a family, we were right around the corner from the house and I heard a crunching coming from the backseat.

?Boys? What is that noise??? automatically assuming someone got into a bag which contained snacks from the store.

?That isn?t us Mommy. It is coming from Addie. She is eating her necklace?

?PULL OVER!?

As my husband pulled over to the side of the road I jumped out into the backseat to do the typical finger sweep through her mouth and discovered pieces of the beads in her mouth. I freaked and took the necklace off while still sweeping through her mouth to make sure I didn?t miss any pieces.

Talk about sheer HORROR!

I couldn?t believe it!

She had never, ever, EVER tried to put her necklace in her mouth let alone eat it! You would think we don?t feed her?!

Needless to say, that night we retired the necklace, and my heart broke a little bit. Especially after last night when she woke up at 2:30am and stayed up for an hour crying in what seemed to be pain and frustration of her mouth.

The most helpless feeling as a parent is not being able to comfort your baby. After climbing in her bed with her several times, Addison decided the only way she would go back to sleep was on Daddy?s chest.

I foresee a long stretch of frustration without the help of her teething necklace until these molars aren?t being such assholes!
