Former Los Angeles Lakers Coach Phil Jackson Speaks On Current State Of Team

Sam Smith caught up with former Los Angeles Lakers coach Phil Jackson to learn of what the legendary coach has been up to since he retired from coaching and thus left the Lakers, which hired Mike Brown as his replacement.

Jackson still says he's staying away from coaching but that doesn't mean he has shied away from voicing his opinion - even while simultaneously saying he doesn't want to voice it.

This came into play when Smith asked Jackson about the current Lakers.

"I think they're learning the system, coming together," Jackson said. "They've got new pieces. Speed isn't what they want it to be. This is a team that's been used to playing whatever level of half court and taking care of opponents with execution. With their new kind of way they're going to play I think they're going to have some speed and some easier baskets and easier ability to make some points. I think they're a team in transition, so to speak, and we'll see some changes. I don't think they're done changing the personnel."

The Lakers are definitely a different team both stylistically and personnel-wise than the team Jackson left after a second round sweep at the hands of the Dallas Mavericks sent the Lakers home. Watching this team not run the triangle is sort of weird at times and the lack of a real training camp has hindered their development.

The Lakers are 6-4 and winners of two straight. All six of their wins have come at home.
